Privacy Policy
Karttunen · Last updated 26 June 2026
Karttunen is a map and GPS-track recording app for iOS and Android. It is built and published by an independent developer. This policy explains what the app does with your data. The short version: Karttunen has no user accounts, runs no analytics or tracking, and keeps your location and recorded tracks on your device. The only data that ever leaves your device is the requests the app makes to map-tile servers to download the map imagery you are looking at.
Who is responsible
Karttunen is operated by an individual developer, not a company. If you have any questions about this policy or your data, contact [email protected].
Information the app uses on your device
The following data is created and used entirely on your device. It is never transmitted to the developer or to any server.
- Location. With your permission, the app reads your device’s GPS location and compass heading to show where you are on the map and to record tracks. Location is used live for display and is never uploaded.
- Recorded tracks. When you start a recording, the app saves your location over time as a track (GPX) in the app’s private storage on your device. Tracks stay on your device until you delete them. You can choose to export or share a track yourself using your device’s standard share sheet; that action, and where the file then goes, is entirely under your control.
- Settings and cached maps. The app stores your settings (such as the selected map source and your last map position) and a cache of downloaded map tiles in its private storage, so the app works offline and starts where you left off.
Information that leaves your device
To show you a map, the app downloads map-image tiles from third-party tile servers. When it requests a tile, that server necessarily receives your device’s IP address and the coordinates of the tile being requested. Because a tile’s coordinates correspond to the area of the map you are viewing, a tile server can infer the approximate area you are looking at. This is inherent to any app that streams online maps. The app caches tiles aggressively to reduce how often it makes these requests.
Depending on the map source you select, these tiles are fetched from one or more third-party map providers, each of which is an independent service with its own privacy practices.
The app sends no other data to any server. It does not send your location, your recorded tracks, your settings, or any identifier about you.
What the app does not do
- No user accounts, sign-in, or registration.
- No analytics, usage tracking, or behavioural profiling.
- No crash-reporting or telemetry services.
- No advertising and no advertising identifiers.
- No selling or sharing of personal data with anyone.
Permissions
The app requests location access so it can show your position and record tracks, and internet access so it can download map tiles. On Android it also uses a foreground-service and notification permission so that track recording can continue while the app is in the background. You can grant or revoke these permissions at any time in your device settings; revoking location access disables positioning and recording but otherwise leaves the app usable.
Data retention and deletion
All of your data lives on your device. You can delete individual recorded tracks within the app, clear the map-tile cache from the app’s settings, and remove everything by uninstalling the app. There is no server-side data for the developer to retain or delete.
Children
Karttunen is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect any personal information from anyone, including children.
